Mimi and Mamaw came to visit! We were hanging out on the back porch and started talking about the beach. Then it was mentioned that Mamaw had never been before! I was like, “You’ve never seen the ocean?!!” So, we made a last-minute trip to Wrightsville Beach. One thing I love about living in NC, the beach and the mountains are just a short drive away! It was also Michael’s first time. We had a great day and the weather was beautiful!IMG_0701

Big news at 17 months…Michael started walking (officially at 16.5 months)!

Definitely see some similarities here between Logan and Michael. I don’t have a many photos of Logan when he was a kid, but it’s fun to compare when I come across one.

For the most part, Scofield is very good with Michael...not as patient as Guinness, but still great for a cat.

Michael does have more than just canine and feline playmates. Leah lives down the street and was born less then a week before Michael.

GUINNESS THE MENACE

Our sweet boy, Guinness, was very sick back in the spring. He was diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis (fatty liver disease). It is a very serious and life-threatening disease in cats.  He was eventually referred to North Carolina State Veterinary School in Raleigh because he required more care than what our vet could provide.

First round of meds, fluids, and food from the vet. Unfortunately when he came home from NC State, it was a lot worse than this.

Getting his fluids. He wasn't going well here at all. This was the day he was referred to NC State.

I was so worried about Guinness. Logan was flying the evening I had to transfer Guinness and I dreaded bringing Michael with me and sitting there for hours, especially past his bedtime. I had to take Guinness to the ER because it was after hours. We were there until after 10pm but thankfully Michael was really good. He scooted around the waiting room, read books, played with toys, ate snacks, said “Heeeey!” to everyone, and was entertained watching all the dogs going in and out.

For those of you who have never met Guinness, he’s a very special cat. He has the best personality of any cat I’ve ever had. He’s just the most perfect, easy-going, playful, lovable, fat cat ever. He’s way too young to leave us. (6 years old)

Guinness ended up having a lot of testing and surgery to insert a feeding tube among other procedures. He was in the NC State hospital for about a week. The doctor called us every morning to give us updates. Everyone who cared for Guinness fell in love with him. One of the docs even told us that we weren’t getting him back; everyone in their department wanted to keep him as the hospital mascot. Our lovable and friendly Guinness the Menace!

We could make appointments to visit him.

Throughout the week, we went to see him during visitation hours.

Time to take him home and learn how to feed him through a tube and give him his medicine.

And finally, it was time to get our instructions on how to feed him through a tube and give him meds…and take him home!

At first when Guinness came home it was like having a newborn again. His strict feeding and medication schedule was rough. I had to stay up late, get up early, measure cat formula, heat it up, feedings took forever...along with caring for Michael. Not gonna lie, it was rough!

At first when Guinness came home it was like having a newborn again. His strict feeding and medication schedule was rough. I had to stay up late, get up early, measure cat formula, heat it up, feedings took forever…I had to make a detailed chart for his NINE medications…plus take care of Michael of course.

He would just sleep right through feedings.
First day of feedings at home.

Eventually he perked up and we could see his personality coming back. And with the help of the nutritionists at NC State, his feeding schedule got easier to handle.

We are so happy that Guinness made a full recovery! After a couple of months, his feeding tube was removed and he was back to normal. His doctor at NC State thinks this liver issue could’ve been triggered by another disease he has which is called inflammatory bowel disease. It’s basically an autoimmune disease like celiac in humans. So he has to stay on a special diet for the rest of his life. Talk about one high maintenance rugrat. But we love him. And we hope he remains healthy for many years to come!

Michael talks a lot. His favorite word is “Hey.” He tells everyone ‘hey,’ even complete strangers! He also likes to pretend talking on the phone…in his own language of course. It’s so cute. He also loves balls and dancing.

You can tell he’s very tired in this video. The band-aid is because Scofield bit him…not that bad…first bite, but I’m sure not the last.

He scooted around the kitchen for a while and just chatted it up on my old phone.

Michael: 15 Months continued…

A few photos I missed for 15 Months:

Michael loves his blocks, reading books, his stuffed animals, re-organizing the pantry and the Tupperware cabinet. And we’re still working on taking those first steps.

Michael: 15 Months

I’m back to blogging. And once again, I have to catch up! I finally got a new computer, so blogging will not be as slow as before. But here’s 15 Months… I don’t remember a lot of details and stuff over the past months because I haven’t kept up, but at least I have tons of photos and videos!

all day every day...If I have food, they all want some.

Logan had an interview in Dallas with American Airlines. More on that in a later post.

After Michael's fever didn't go away, I called the pediatrician to ask what to do. And even though they were closing in 20 minutes, they told me to bring him on in right then. I was so impressed that they were willing to stay late to help and thankful to live just few minutes away so Michael didn't have to wait until the next day.

Logan did the Krispy Kreme Challenge in Raleigh with some guys from work. (2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour) You run 2.5 miles through downtown Raleigh, then eat a dozen doughnuts, and run 2.5 miles back. Logan did complete the challenge and didn't even puke. I could never! Michael and I didn't get to go downtown and watch since it was freezing temps and he was getting over an ear infection.

He’s doing better with table foods these days but meal time takes forever.

He's great at restaurants...so far. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts because we all know that toddlers can be a pain to take out to eat.

I got him signing ‘more’ on video, and every time we say, “good job,” he claps.

We finally had to put a gate at the stairs. Logan heard a smack on the floor and looked over to find Michael on the floor crying. And then he figured out that he climbed up and fell off. So now he only wants to climb the stairs instead of letting us carry him up.

Guinness is very protective of Michael. If Michael is crying, Guinness has to make sure he's okay. If Guinness can't get into Michael's room, he goes to the monitor and pushes it around the table. He gets very concerned and it's the sweetest thing. You can see him here in the bottom of the photo watching over Michael while he naps.
